Built to grip, and to keep gripping
Ordinary vinyl gets its grip from a surface texture that wears away. Safety flooring has the grip built through the material: particles of aluminium oxide, quartz or silicon carbide run all the way down, so a floor still meets its slip rating years into its life. That is the difference between a floor that is safe and one that was safe when it was fitted.
The two names worth knowing are Altro and Polyflor, both British manufacturers with decades of test data behind their ranges. Between them they cover everything from a domestic wet room to a commercial kitchen, in wood and stone effects as well as the plain colours you would expect. We supply and fit both.
The fitting matters as much as the material. Sheet vinyl is scribed to the room, the joints are hot weld rodded so they are sealed rather than butted, and the edges are coved up the wall with a capping seal where water is involved. Done that way there is nowhere for water or dirt to get in, which is the entire point.

Questions we are asked
- What is safety flooring?
- It is sheet vinyl with grit particles such as aluminium oxide, quartz or silicon carbide built through the whole thickness of the material, so it stays slip resistant as it wears rather than losing its grip after a year. It is sold with a tested slip rating, which is what specifiers and insurers ask for.
- What do the R ratings and PTV numbers mean?
- The two common measures are the pendulum test value (PTV) and the DIN ramp R rating. A PTV of 36 or above is regarded as a low slip potential in wet conditions, and R10 to R12 covers most commercial situations. We match the product to what the room actually does, and can supply the manufacturer's test data for your records.
- Do you weld and cove the flooring?
- Yes. Hot weld rod joints and coved skirtings with a capping seal are what make a safety floor hygienic and watertight, and they are standard on wet rooms and commercial work. It is skilled work and it is done properly or not at all.
- Is safety flooring only for commercial buildings?
- No. It is increasingly popular in homes for wet rooms and accessible bathrooms, particularly where someone has mobility needs. Modern ranges come in wood and stone effects that look nothing like a hospital corridor.
- Can you fit safety flooring in an occupied building?
- Usually, yes, by working room by room or out of hours. Tell us the constraints when you enquire and we will plan the sequence around them.
