Is engineered wood as good as solid wood?

For most homes it is the better choice. The wear layer is real oak and looks identical underfoot, but the base stops the movement that makes solid wood cup and gap in damp or centrally heated rooms. It is also the only way to have real wood over underfloor heating with confidence.

Can engineered wood go in a kitchen?

Yes, with sensible care. Spills wiped up promptly do no harm, and an oiled finish is easy to spot-repair. For a bathroom or a utility room that gets properly wet, we would steer you towards a waterproof luxury vinyl instead.

How thick should the wear layer be?

Three millimetres is plenty for a family home and allows a couple of full sandings over its life. Thicker layers cost more and are mainly for commercial use. We will talk you through the options with the samples in front of you.
